The signs of gum disease are often silent. Since this is the case, you should pay close attention to the subtle changes that may be taking place in your mouth. There are warning signs and action needs to be taken when they occur.

Some signs of gum disease

- You may notice some bleeding when you eat hard foods, floss or brush your teeth.
- The gums may appear swollen and/or tender.
- There can be pain in your mouth when brushing.
- The gums may begin to recede. They will pull away from each tooth and the teeth will appear longer than in the past.
- Teeth can become loose.
- New spaces can appear between your teeth.
- Bad breath is prominent.
- There can be pus between your teeth and gums.
- Sores can appear in your mouth.
- You may notice your teeth meet differently when chewing or biting.
- If you have a partial denture, it may become ill fitting.

Risk factors need to be considered when there are signs of gum disease. Some of the risk factors include:

If you have diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis or have a great amount of stress, you are increasingly at risk of having signs of gum disease.
Some research has suggested that gum disease can be passed through saliva. The saliva can be passed through kissing your child or your partner. People who are susceptible to gum disease include about 30% of the population that are genetically predisposed to the disease.

There are several options for treating gum disease. Scaling and root planning are non-surgical procedures that can be performed. These are less invasive and less costly than the surgical procedures. Although this can be highly successful treatment, dentists will tell you that you will need continuous maintenance to prevent further treatment and surgery to correct the problems at a later date.

Periodontal surgery is necessary if the surrounding tissue is diseased to a point that non-surgical treatment would not be enough to repair the problems.

Signs of gum disease should not be ignored. If the signs are seen in your mirror when you are brushing and flossing, they should be brought to the attention of your dentist.

Flossing has long been known to prevent tooth decay and ultimately save your teeth. The first step in proper flossing is choosing the right floss. There are many different types of floss. You will need to pick the right one for your own situation and your own teeth.

If you have tight teeth, shop for one that is specific to that. By choosing the right floss, you can prevent snagging your teeth or loosening your fillings or crowns. There are also devices that can be used if you have limited dexterity. As a rule, flossing requires two hands. If you need a device that will allow you to use one hand, they are available. Once you have chosen the appropriate floss, you can begin to properly floss your teeth.

How to floss your teeth

Before you begin flossing, cut about 18 inches of floss from the container. Wrap each end around your middle finger. Leave about 2 inches of floss to remain loose. Grasp that end with your index finger and your thumb.

Begin flossing by gently gliding the floss between the teeth. This should be done in a sawing motion and done gently. Be careful not to break the floss. This can cause damage to the surrounding tissue.

The floss should be angled into a “c” shape. Flossing then begins by guiding the floss up and down along the surface of the tooth. Gently guide the floss a little bit below the gum line. Repeat this several times.

Continue this process between each of your teeth. It may be best to start at the top right molars and continue to the left. The next step would be repeating it on the lower teeth. Unwrap some of the floss from your finger to provide a clean section of floss for each tooth.

Upon completion of flossing, brush your teeth and rinse your mouth with mouthwash or water. Learning to floss your teeth and following the process should be done every time you brush. If mornings are too hurried, be sure to floss at night before your last brushing.

Flossing with braces presents additional obstacles. You should have a floss threader to allow you to floss under your wires.

Insert the threader under the wire and pull the floss through until it is under the wire. You will be using about 18 inches of floss. There is floss with stiff ends. This is easier to insert under the wires. With stiff ended floss, you will insert the stiff end under the wire and pull it through.

Once you have the floss properly inserted, proceed to gently floss between each of your teeth as described. When flossing between your teeth, be gentle, and floss up and down under the gum line. Be gentle.

It is important not to miss any of your teeth. Floss all of your teeth including the molars. Maintain a steady schedule of brushing and flossing.

Good oral hygiene is important for good health. Proper flossing is vital to good oral hygiene. Your entire body is affected by your oral hygiene. Flossing should be performed at least twice each day. Take the time to do it correctly. Use care when flossing. It would be counter-productive to damage the surrounding tissue, pull out fillings or cause loosening of crowns while attempting to perform a needed task.
